Equality Statement

Our equality statement demonstrates how we work to ensure people are treated with dignity and respect, aiming to create equality of opportunity and eliminating discrimination across our provision.

Promoting equality and community cohesion at Ormiston Park Academy (OPA)

At OPA we have a strong commitment to fairness and equality in everything that we do.

  • We try to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and with respect.
  • We work hard to make sure that the academy is a safe and secure environment for everyone.
  • We recognise that people have different needs, and we understand that treating people equally does not always involve treating them all exactly the same.
  • We recognise that for some students extra support is needed to help them to achieve and be successful.
  • We try to make sure that people from different groups are consulted and involved in our decisions, for example through talking to students and parents/carers, and through our Student Voice.
  • We aim to make sure that no-one experiences harassment, less favourable treatment or discrimination because of the following protected characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

At Ormiston Park Academy we are committed to:

  • Promoting equality of opportunity.
  • Eliminating discrimination and harassment.
  • Valuing diversity and promoting positive relationships.
  • Providing an inclusive education which enables all pupils to develop their full potential.
  • Meeting the requirements of the Equality Act 2010.
  • The Equality Act 2010.

The Equality Act 2010 replaces previous anti-discrimination legislation with a single Act. The Equality Duty is set out in section 149 of the Act. It replaces the three previous public sector equality duties – for race, disability and gender – and covers the following protected characteristics:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership (but only in respect of eliminating unlawful discrimination)
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

We ensure that we have due regard to the need to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct that is prohibited by the Act.
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a characteristic and those who don’t foster good relations between people who share a characteristic and those who don’t.
