Reading Support

A child’s reading skills are important to their success in school as they will allow them to access the breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and language skills. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative time for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them. At Ormiston Park Academy we have a number of opportunities open to students that will help advance their reading, no matter what their current level.

Accelerated Reader

This is a computer-based programme used to monitor students reading practice and progress. Accelerated Reader helps to guide students to appropriate books for their individual reading age. Students take short quizzes after reading a book to check their understanding.

Years 7-9 access accelerated reader weekly, it is also used as a method of intervention for students who require extra support with their reading. In some cases accelerated reader is used as a way of developing a love of reading.

Students are provided with books to read in school and at home. Accelerated reader generates data on the students reading age and ability that is available to all teachers.

Lexia

Lexia PowerUp provides explicit, systematic, personalised learning in the six areas of reading instruction, and delivers norm-referenced performance data and analysis without interrupting the flow of teaching to administer a test. This research-proven, technology-based approach accelerates reading skills development, predicts students’ year-end performance and provides teachers data-driven action plans to help differentiate teaching. Any dyslexic students would have access to Lexia, It can be used at home as well as in school, and is usually delivered during tutor time.

Lifeboat programme

One hour a week on the Lifeboat programme; a series of ten books endorsed by the Dyslexia Association. Students engage with ‘lessons’ at a level appropriate to their phonics competency.

‘Toe by Toe’

A programme for students who are early readers. This would be delivered on a one to one basis by an LSA.
